“ Yesterday afternoon a fellow very tall tree fell down this steep slope. The crashing lasted a full 6 seconds. Doesn’t sound long in words, but in time it’s quite a while.“
Bulga tree-sit Diary day 44
Yesterday afternoon a fellow very tall tree fell down this steep slope. The crashing lasted a full 6 seconds. Doesn’t sound long in words, but in time it’s quite a while. Unnerving for a tree sitter nearby.
Old or unhealthy trees falling is a natural and important part of life here. Creating space and light for new growth in the thick canopy and food for ground dwelling creatures and microbes. These narrow gaps are surrounded by life that give them easy access to this new source.
Clearfelling doesn’t create that same opportunity. All the underground microbial network is starved, cooked by unrelenting sunlight or washed away in eroding rainfall.
Life becomes halted for many years, struggling to recover. When it actually does recover and supports a refreshed but often diminished habitat for all, the excavators move back in clearfelling yet another ‘plantation’.
