A visit from a Knitting Nanna
We were lucky to have a visit from Knitting Nanna Chris Kwala and here are her musings:
I am a Knitting Nanna from Coffs Harbour and I had been following the Save Bulga Forest actions with keen interest. There is not much work stoppage direct action in the region of the Great Koala National Park so with 2 other Coffs women I decided to go to Elands to see if I could help a bit – what a revelation! I found an engaged, committed and really welcoming group who have a community centre (the Mill) which is second to none.
Well what did I do?
- I listened – about plans to stop the logging
- I got up early to travel to 3 ways with a bunch of sleepy souls and a pile of protest signs. Three mornings in the mist – beautiful.
- I listened to the dawn chorus of bird song and had a little cry.
- I felt the team protected my Knitting Nanna friend from Sydney who was locked-on in the forest. In order to ensure Forestry don’t start work its critical that they are informed that someone is already locked-on.
- I loved being at the Mill despite the often inclement weather.
- I did a bit of sweeping, eating, photography, cleaning, talking, sleeping, laughing, listening.
- You’ll note to my shame that I didn’t cook – the group was spared my boiled egg talents.
- I engaged with some fabulous forest defenders and learned a whole lot – thank you all and particularly Greg.
- I know I will go back soonish.
