“This tree knows this valley- has watched the arc of the sun across the sky, been pummelled by thunderstorms and bathed in moonlight.
In the human sphere time slips through a hole in my pocket.“
Bulga tree-sit Diary Day 27 –
Time feels soft as whispers here. Not in the slow meander of the minutes into hours for me, mortal human, but in the tens of millions of years imbued in the DNA of the forest around me.
This tree knows this valley- has watched the arc of the sun across the sky, been pummelled by thunderstorms and bathed in moonlight.
In the human sphere time slips through a hole in my pocket.
In the human sphere time slips through a hole in my pocket.
I race against it and still it speeds up: We want express postage, fast fashion and 90 second microwave rice which we eat straight from the packet whilst staring at our phones in the moment’s respite between work and electricity bills.
I feel braver today, so I climb my rope all the way up to my anchor. I follow with my fingertips the weave of the knot that holds me hanging. Such a thin piece of rope to suspend my whole life from, like the sliver of forest that remains standing on the east coast of this continent, drawing in carbon and moisture and sunlight and keeping our planet habitable.
As anthropogenic climate change looms its head, we have every reason to panic. Action is urgent in this rapidly closing window of opportunity to reduce emissions, drawdown carbon and repair the self-regulating earth systems which are beginning to return to chaos.
