” If we can stare honestly and unflinchingly at these facts, and persevere through the despair they inspire rather than avoiding it, we will find that there is anger and passion and love, emotions we can harness in our fight to protect what is left.

Bulga tree-sit Diary  day 35

Reflecting on what has been lost, on what could have been, is a painful but vital process, the avoidance of which results in an apathetic numbing, dooming one to repeat past mistakes.

Immersed in the abundance of life here on Biripi country, I’m pausing to reflect on what the capitalist system and ongoing colonial project of Australia has stolen from this earth. Of First Nations peoples, it has stolen land, lives, freedom, children, knowledge and culture, the ability to live free of trauma, oppression and fear. It has stolen clean water and healthy soil, countless species and their homes, tearing down our web of interconnected life support systems and the hope of a liveable future for so many. These losses, interwoven and rippling their effects across the globe, cannot be undone, but that does not mean they are doomed to be repeated. If we can stare honestly and unflinchingly at these facts, and persevere through the despair they inspire rather than avoiding it, we will find that there is anger and passion and love, emotions we can harness in our fight to protect what is left.
