In our response to the climate emergency, we must not act from a place of panic – this only brings conflict, spurring that fearful and self interested part of our humanity. We must slow down our minds and rethink what we value as a species, how we want to interact with each other..

Bulga tree-sit Diary  – Day 33
Whilst the human world seems to carry on full pelt in the pursuit of endless growth and material wealth, here in the forest there is no rush. The rainforest species in the gully bellow have been here since dinosaurs roamed the supercontinent Gondwana, an ark carrying this deep time astride a sea of cow paddocks and new housing developments . Time drip drops from leaf tip to mycelium to birdsnest, thread together in the slow cycling of nutrients and water and cellulose. The forest will grow only as fast as it can photosynthesise.
In our response to the climate emergency, we must not act from a place of panic – this only brings conflict, spurring that fearful and self interested part of our humanity. We must slow down our minds and rethink what we value as a species, how we want to interact with each other.
The anxious urge to act on climate change, to reel back in our borrowed time, is tempered by the need for me to sit tight. I place my feet against the trunk of the tree, leaning into my infinitesimal smallness against the vast tapestry of this ecosystem.
I may have only a fleeting human life like you, but right now this ancient forest is in need of this little speck.
